"Hiya, doll face."

"James! I could have used your sharp wit and smooth tongue at dinner tonight. How could you let your favorite sister down?" Maggie asked as she jumped up from her dressing table to confront him as he entered her bedroom.

"Sorry, love, it could not be helped. What happened, anyway?" James asked as he laid his long body across her bed.

"Nothing that eventful, I guess. Mother and daddy invited Frank Ashford over for dinner. Again. Oh, James, what am I going to do? Mother is being relentless about Frank. She won't even say William's name anymore. She’s treating me like a child.

“In fact, today she sent Claire out to the backyard to get me. Imagine, mother giving my little sister permission to scold me! Mother’s little messenger told me I had done enough sulking for one day. What does mother expect me to do?" Maggie asked him as she began pulling the bobby pins from her hair. It fell like a golden curtain down her back.

"I just don't understand why I can't be with William. If mother and daddy didn't like the fact that I was being courted by someone they didn't approve of, why let me be courted by him at all?" Maggie demanded as she picked up her hairbrush and began raking it through her hair with vengeful strokes.

"I don't know, love. Why does mother do anything she does? You know why. Money," he said, his lips curling with disgust.

"James, you mustn't be disrespectful of mother."

"Oh come on, you know I'm right. Mother's always prattling on about money. It's gotten worse since Louise ran off and eloped with that Italian fellow," he stopped speaking to pluck a piece of lint off his shirt sleeve. He turned his honey-hued gaze toward her as she gazed at her reflection in the mirror.

"Do you really believe that's why mother is set against me and William?"

James let out a shuddering breath before answering her. "I honestly don't know, love," he rose from the bed and came to stand behind her. Meeting her eyes in the mirror he asked her, "What is wrong with Frank Ashford? Have you given him a chance?"

"I can't believe you would ask that. You know how William and I feel about each other," Maggie said. She spun around to face him, her eyes wide in disbelief.

"I understand you have feelings for him," he said as he patted her head. "But it takes a lot more than that for a marriage, Maggie. I think that's all mother and father are trying to tell you."

"Fine talk, coming from you, the great philanderer of St. Charles. What do you know about marriage? Besides, I don't care about Frank. I care about William. I love him and I am going to be with him, even if it means I have to run away to do it. “

"I was afraid you'd say that," James said as he turned from her and began pacing the room. "I never should've helped you. If I would have known you were going to get serious.
